What about the Advantages and disadvantages of O-Ring Seals

O Ring Seals 2 900x313, Horiaki

O Ring Seals is a torus or doughnut-shaped loop intended to avoid the flow of liquids or gases. It is used to block a path that may otherwise allow a liquid or a gas to escape. O Ring Seals is one of the simplest precision mechanical parts ever produced and continues to be one of the most commonly used sealing products, used successfully in a wide temperature range and a variety of fluids to avert leakage, and penetration of external environmental media and dust. Depending on the operating temperature, the contact medium, and the pressure to withstand, there are also differences in the choice of rubber. They are generally formed from an elastomer, although O-rings are also made from PTFE, thermoplastic materials, metals, both hollow&solid.

This is one of the most versatile sealing components and are used for static, dynamic, hydraulic, pneumatic parts, making them a highly flexible solution for vast engineering applications.

Advantages

  • Simple structure, minimal footprint, compact installation location.
  • Has self-sealing effect, no regular adjustment required
  • Good sealing performance in static-sealing applications &will not leak
  • The friction resistance of movement is weak, ideal for conditions where the strain varies.
  • Cost-effective, lightweight and can be reused.
  • Adaptability, and a wide variety of implementations.

Disadvantages

  • When used for dynamic sealing compression, the initial friction resistance is high.
  • It is very difficult to prevent leakage when moving the seal, and to monitor the leakage does not surpass the specified permit value.
  • In air&water pressure sealing, it is necessary to add lubricating oil to avoid wear&to add dustproof and protective retaining rings on certain occasions.
  • The processing dimensions and precision of the dual coupling parts are strictly necessary.

Based on the relative movement of the O-shaped rubber seal ring and the sealed device, it can be split into an O-ring for static sealing, an O-ring for reciprocating sealing, and for rotary motion sealing.
